It’s peak dahlia season here in San Francisco as well as in Seattle.
My Instagram feed is full of happy posts from friends exclaiming in childlike, fierce joy that nothing else matters except this display that nature is amazing, just look at what I have in my backyard!

Does it matter that these flowers aren’t native to the area? At least they aren’t invasive. (Side note.. I am a big fan of mixing natives, ornamental non-natives that aren’t invasive along with a few edibles in the garden.)
After I took a slew of photos of an artist’s gathering I participated in called SF Sketchers. I was inspired to make a quick painting (to me quick right now means under an hour) during my Morning Larks drawing meetup and came up with this:
All of these photos were taken at the “Dahlia Dell” in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco by Lorraine Sawicki.
Lovely post and beautiful painting! Truly a gift of happiness. I have such fond memories of visiting that dahlia garden.
These photos are gorgeous! Love the bright and vivid colors as well as how perfect the petals look. As always, your artwork captures the real subject beautifully!
